It has always been medically advised that we should consume a daily
dose of fruits and vegetables but due to our busy lifestyles, many of
us
find it difficult to achieve this goal. Green Smoothies are a great,
easy and simply way to do this.
What is a Green Smoothie you may be
wondering - a green smoothie is simply a fruit smoothie with the
addition of green vegetables like spinach, celery, cucumbers, etc.
For 2011 Christmas, my son gifted me with a juicer which I
used a few times but did not like the fact that I had to
discard the most essential part of the vegetables (a juicer grinds the
vegetables, extracting its juices leaving behind pulp etc). In
addition, it took
a little while to clean the juicer.
A few weeks ago, he introduced me to a health recipe that his
mother-in-law started drinking. As a matter of fact, I remember on our
last trip to Anegada, BVI, she had a container of some green stuff
(which looked very unappealing) and we teased her. I later found out
that her mixture consisted of banana,
spinach and flax seeds.
For approximately 45 days, I have been experiencing heart palpitations
which on some days can be very uncomfortable. I finally paid my doctor
a visit and he confirmed that the palpitations were the result of
my high blood pressure.
In the early months of 2011, for about six months, I had a bad
experience with my
high blood pressure medications. Many of them I was allergic (itching)
to
and one in particular I got a dry cough which my doctor eventually told
me that it was a side effect!
I found a herb tea -
Triple Leaf Tea for Blood Pressure
- in the
grocery store and have since been drinking
this tea. My blood pressure reads on moderate high.
With this recent heart palpitation, I decided to get even more serious
with my health so armed with the information that I got from my son, I
purchased a ,
I
purchased a Premium multi purpose nine pieces chopper/ blender
and lots of green vegetables and fruits.

I did a YouTube search about juicing for high bloold pressure and this
is where I learned about Green Smoothies. Apparently Green Smoothies
are the way to go for improve health and even weight loss.
Some people may be appalled by the look of a glass of Green Smoothie
but think about how healthy the contents of the glass is. Remember the
fruits give the Green Smoothie its flavor, personally the bananas are
great sweeteners. If you are new to trying this, you may want to add
maybe honey until you get accustomed to the flavors. Carrots are great
too!
I must say that I enjoy these Green Smoothies. My blender is so easy to
use and clean. I don’t have to fuss myself about how to prepare my
vegetables, all I have to do is to blend them together. Here are some
of the vegetables that I use in my Green Smoothies: baby spinach,
cucumbers, carrots, celery and broccoli. For the fruit mostly I use
bananas. I bought some berries and went crazy over them. I kept
munching on them but they spoil easily. You can also use frozen fruits
but be sure not to purchase the ones that are packaged with
any sort of
liquid or syrup. Dole now sells strawberries, raspberries (for example)
that are freshly picked and frozen.
A great extra with using frozen fruit, is that they chill the smoothie.
Some people would not enjoy their Green Smoothie unless it is chilled.
Another great tip, to keep your banana longer, they can be frozen.

How To Make A
Green Smoothie
First you will need a blender of some sort that is powerful enough to
finely
grind the vegetables, fruits and ice.
Cut your fruits and vegetables into small pieces and place into
blender. Add some water – the more water you put the less thick your
Green Smoother will be. If you are not using frozen fruits, you may
want to add some ice. Cover the blender and blend away until all the
content are finely blended.
Note: for cucumbers, just cut off the end and thickly slice the
cucumber. Do not remove the skin or seeds. For the carrots, just cut
off the end and thickly slice the carrots.
The quantity to be used for each vegetable and fruit will all depend on
the size of your blender.
